You find yourself on a train. Gazing through the window, it feels as if nature is posing for a portrait with its autumn leaves. The rhythm from your headphones delicately tingles your heart. You’re listening to a dreamy, indie-rock band. You’re wrapped in your favorite sweater that goes just so well with your baggy jeans.
It’s the season of Autumn. Fall outside is taking over your body in the most tender and romantic way. Leaves are falling softly around you, gently warming your heart.
As one of the most beautiful seasons has arrived I’d like to share some dreamy and romantic recommendations. I find great comfort in the pieces described below.
Book Recommendations
South of the Border West of the Sun by Haruki Murakami
I can only admire a book as remarkable as this one. Shelving Murakami in the nearest jazz bar or coffee place feels like a slice of heaven. This, I could only describe as the bitter-sweet escape from the melancholic reality that Autumn can envelop you in.
Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami
This piece will lead you way more west of the sun. Reading these pages, you can find yourself wandering around trees from which fall the fruits of depression and anxiety, confusion and death. Yet, you’ll get a glimpse of friendship, love, and dedication. It took me some time, but the brutal Murakami won me over.
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
An absolute classic, this book indeed works its magic. Austen’s portrayal of love, breaking all stereotypes imposed by society, will cast you as the protagonist in your romanticized world.
Notes from the Underground by Dostoevsky
A somewhat darker read to accompany you in your Autumn journey. Dostoevsky’s art can awaken demons you didn’t know were sheltering in your mind and body. The notes would fit perfectly on a rainy day with a cup of tea and a warm blanket.
Film Recommendations
Before Sunrise by Richard Linklater (1995)
This is the go-to movie if you want to hop aboard the love train. A story of burning passion and love. Embark on a magical ride with Jessie and Celine, wandering the streets of Paris.
Perfect Days by Wim Wenders (2023)
I unconditionally love this movie. You may end up crying on The House of the Rising Sun by The Animals as you witness the perfect Tokyo Sunrise. Appreciate the ordinary, cherish the simplicity of life, and take time for yourself. This film is my self-care gem.
When Harry Met Sally by Rob Reiner (1989)
The perfect blend of Autumn aesthetic vibes and the rom-com reality. White T-shirts tucked into high-wasted jeans, knitted vests, and shiny tassel loafers, as you walk around old-school retro New York.
Fallen Angels by Kar-Wai Wong (1995)
On the scale of mysterious, I want to be Kar-Wai Wong mysterious. Put on your stockings and light a cigarette as the sun sets at 5 PM and the darkness takes over the world.
Sex, Lies, and Videotape by Steven Soderbergh (1989)
Have a conversation with a stranger at the coffee shop, and question your principles for what’s wrong and write. Witness the moral battle between the well-behaved wife and the chaotic, erotic artist.
Coraline by Henry Selick (2009)
This film evokes absolute nostalgia along with fear, tension, and curiosity. The skeptic Coraline will take your hand and lead you into the unknown while showing you an adorable friendship in the making.
Music Recommendations
Strangeways, Here We Come by The Smiths (1987)
A few mornings ago, I woke up with the song Last Night I Dreamed That Somebody Loved Me playing in my head. Morrissey’s voice warms my heart and transports me back in time to drink a glass of wine in a vintage corner.
Cry by Cigarettes After Sex (2019)
I dream of getting married while Heavenly plays in the background.
Chris Isaak by Chris Isaak (1987)
An album I’ve recently discovered. As I stroll down the streets, wearing my autumn skirts, listening to this man’s gentle voice makes me feel like the main character.
The Car by Arctic Monkeys (2022)
I’m absolutely sure there’s a mirrorball while listening to this album. It feels as if the Arctic Monkeys are an '80s band trying to fit modern standards with an old-money aesthetic.
Frank by Amy Winehouse (2003)
An absolute queen has just become one of the main characters in my article. Listening to Frank makes me want to apply my eyeliner thicker than ever, and go back to London.
As you continue your journey, allow yourself to get lost in the dreamy and romantic warmth of the season of Autumn. Whether it’s through the pages of Murakami, wandering the streets of Paris with Jessie and Celine, or listening to the gentle voice of Chris Isaak, these recommendations are meant to warm your soul on rainy days.
Fall can sometimes bring moments of loneliness or melancholy. I hope you’ll find comfort in these pieces, escaping into a world of fiction, romance, and aesthetic beauty.
Thanks for your recommendations. While I have read most of the books you recommend, but seen just one movie, When Harry Met Sally. Hope to see the movies as suggested by you.
Great post to catch the wonderful season. Hot Java and Anita O’Day comes to mind
